List of the Names, with the Nativities, Ages - - 1857. [1229675]
N. P.: N. P.. Very Good. [1857]. Hardcover. 29 7/8? x 11 ¾?. Broadside. Very good: creased at three old folds; toned with a few closed tears and tiny areas of loss (neither affecting text). 15? x 3? vertical strip of offsetting starting at top middle margin. The Seventh Texas legislature met from November 2, 1857 to February 16, 1858. Hardin Richard Runnels, the only man ever to defeat Sam Houston in a political contest, was governor. As Governor, Runnels tried to get the legislature to officially support reestablishment of the African slave trade. He also had the legislature?s support in commissioning John ?Rip? Ford as senior captain of the Texas Rangers in the state?s attempt to secure and protect the frontier. This large broadside, nearly 3 feet in height, lists each elected official?s occupation, the state from which he emigrated, and the year he settled Texas. A rare and special piece of Texana: OCLC reveals no holdings, though a google search shows a holding at the Briscoe Center in the University of Texas System; 88 of the 124 legislators listed merit at least one paragraph in the Handbook of Texas online. Winkler, Checklist of Texas Imprints 1846-1860 927 (not seen). .
