A Tramp Abroad; illustrated by W. Fr. Brown - CLEMENS, Samuel Langhorne.] TWAIN, - 1880.
Hartford, CN: American Publishing Company, 1880 - Octavo (220 x 142 mm). Original full sheep, low bands within gilt rules to spine, dark blue morocco label, numeral "2" blind-stamped to rear cover possibly specifying a distributor (Blanck), sprinkled edges, pink surface-paper endpapers. A few faint scuffs and covers to spine and covers, light rubbing to some extremities, tan-burn to endpapers, small ink splash to p. xvi, pale staining to pp. 418-420, otherwise a few small thumb-marks to fore margins, still an excellent copy in a remarkably fresh example of the publisher's binding. Portrait frontispiece with tissue-guard, "Moses" plate, numerous illustrations as plates and to the text, many of these last full-page, and the plates reckoned in the pagination. First edition, in the publisher's scarce "library" binding, the portrait frontispiece in Blanck's state "A", with the fine underlying lines almost vertical, and the engraver's imprint lower left ("Johnson's preferred state"), the second frontispiece in first state with the caption reading "Moses". A Tramp Abroad was sold by subscription only, the publisher forbidding sale of copies to retail bookstores; judging by prevalence on the market, most subscribers would have chosen the publisher's brown cloth binding: the original sheep is a particularly uncommon survival in this condition. BAL 3386; Johnson pp. 30-31. [Attributes: First Edition]
