Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas - Verne, Jules - 1873.
Sampson Low, Marston, Low and Searle, London 1873 - The book is firmly and squarely bound in late nineteenth century dark green half leather, with matching cloth boards, red spine label, simple gilt tooling and speckling to the edges of the text block. The text block retains its half-title page, but it has only 86 illustrations rather than the expected 112, the block is tight and there is no sign that the absent plates were ever present, so evidently the Victorian binder deliberately or accidently omitted them, fortunately the frontispiece was one of the plates included and they do not form part of the pagination, so there is no sense of incompleteness when handling the book, otherwise the pages are slightly toned, with some minor marks, it is free from inscriptions. One of Verne's best loved and most famous works, featuring the mysterious Captain Nemo, with his powerful, and equally mysterious vessel, The Nautilus. It is distinctly uncommon as a first edition.
