Original Manuscript: Later published by Viking (USA) and Secker and Warburg (UK). 1952 - Autograph manuscript on paper. 472pp written in blue and black ink, recto only. Loose leaves with card upper and lower cover. Contained in the original mailing envelope sent by the author to his agent. In very good condition, reworked by the author throughout. Some damp marking to the bottom corner of later pages. A tale of four westerners who after being marooned on an island in the Indian Ocean attempt to traverse the forbidding Hanhramaut area of southern Arabia to Mukalla and civilisation. The complete original manuscript of the novel first published by Viking in 1953. The work of the poet, novelist, translator and publisher Frederic Prokosch, hailed as something completely new in modern literature, received effusive praise from T. S. Eliot, W. B. Yeats, Thomas Mann, Graham Greene, Somerset Maugham, Albert Camus and scores of other towering figures of 20th century literature.
