Set of Ten Parrots - BARRABAND, Jacques - 1801.
Langlois Paris -05 1801 - Six stipple engravings, printed in colours and finished by hand, with fine, strong colours. Overall size: 55.8 by 40.7cm - framed and glazed. Jacques Barraband was the finest ornithological artist of his time. The son of a weaver at the Aubusson Factory, he is first mentioned as a pupil of Joseph Malaine (1745-1809), the eminent flower painter, and is known to have worked for both the Gobelin Factory and the porcelain factory of Sèvres. His most important work was undoubtedly the 300 or so drawings that he produced for François Levaillant's three great ornithological monographs, including the present Histoire Naturelle des Perroquets, which is considered the most comprehensive and complete catalogue on the subject. This magnificent work includes some of the most lively and colorful bird illustrations ever created. They capture not only the defining characteristics of the species, but also the charming personality of the individual bird.
