L'Âge du cinéma Nos. 1-6 [Complete] - Kyrou, Adonis and Robert Benayoun, - 1951.
Paris: L'Âge du cinéma, 1951. Oblong 8vo, saddle-stapled wraps. 6 numbers in five volumes [4-5 a double number]. Text in French. Profusely illustated. All issues published of this important film periodical of the immediate postwar period devoted to Surrealist and experimental film. The periodical was co-edited by the Greek expat filmmaker Adonis Kyrou (also known as Ado Kyrou) and Benayoun. No. 4-5 was a special double number devoted to Surrealist film. The periodical began during the same year that Cahiers du Cinema was founded, and took a counter-canonical stance against mainstream film criticism, formalism and realism. Wimmer suggests that the periodical also layed some of the foundations for the horror film. With texts throughout the issues by the editors and Benjamin Péret, Billy Wilder, Abner LePetit, Jean Néry, Ladislas Robin, Antonin Artaud, Jean Ferry, Man Ray, Hans Richter, Nino Frank, Henry Miller, Luigi Zampa, Audiberti, Simone Dubreuilh, Octavio Paz, Maurice Scherer, J.-B. Brunius, Jean-Louis Bédouin, Michel Zimbacca, Toyen, Gérard Legrand, Georges Goldfrayn, Andre Bréton, Jindrich Heisler, le Groupe Surréaliste Roumain, Ion Daifas, Bernard Roger, Nora Mitrani, François Valorbe, Jean Schuster, Henri Storck, Boris Dumont, A. Cavalcanti, Lotte H. Eisner, Eugenio Hintz, Alexeieff, Raoul Hausmann, Steen Colding, F. Gaffary, J.-C. Lambert, Gene Moscowitz and others. A very good set, with some minor dust soiling and creasing, and the wraps tearing away from the lower staple on the final number, but still holding.
