Carington Bowles 1785 - British Itinerary by Captain Daniel Paterson, Assistant to The Quarter-Master General of His Majesty's Forces, First Edition 1785. Two volumes in later slipcase. Printed for and sold by Carington Bowles. Contemporary full calf binding with labels to spines contained in later cloth slipcase. Covers a little rubbed and hinges a little worn. Corners bumped. Bindings tight. Old tape repair to inner front hinge of volume one. Contemporary ownership signature to inner covers and titles: John Tilden, Ifield Court. Crossed out contemporary ownership details to reverse of map and to title of volume one. Colour map to front of volume one with some marking and soiling to outer edge: same soiling affecting title, dedication and some early pages (gradually diminishing). Occasional spotting and marking. Some page folding/creasing around areas where the books have been used, noticeably East Anglia and surrounds. The odd contemporary pen mark to the margins. Volume one with engraved title page and engraved dedication followed by preface; indexes of direct roads, cross-roads and Scotch roads; strip maps 1-188 (last two blank); details of branch roads and finally judges' circuits. Volume two with engraved title page; strip maps 1-142; branch road details; cross-road strip maps 1-30; cross-road details; roads of Scotland (distances and stops); errata as final page.
