Narrative Of Lieutenant-General Relative - CLINTON, Lieutenant-General Sir Henry - 1783. [1226663]
8vo. London: J. Debrett, 1783. 8vo, (4), 115 pp., with the errata slip at ffront and the half-title. Portrait of Clinton pasted in at front. Contemporary marbled boards. Front cover completely detached. Preserved in a quarter green morocco box. First edition, presentation copy inscribed by Clinton in (smudged) ink on the half-title. Reese notes of his copy: “After distinguishing himself several times in action, particularly at Bunker Hill, Clinton was appointed in 1776 to act as second-in-command to Howe. He played a major part in the battle of Long Island, and in the capture of New York on Sept. 15th of that year. When Howe returned to England in May 1778, Clinton became commander-in-chief of the forces in North America, with Cornwallis as his second in command. Following the capitulation of Yorktown and the final loss of the colonies, he resigned his command and returned to England, publishing this NARRATIVE. in 1783. This resulted in an acrimonious quarrel with, and several rejoinders from, Cornwallis.” A scarce book inscribed -- ABPC records one inscribed copy and Rare Book Hub adds a couple more.
