Paris - Furne Et Cie 1857 - The works of Luc de Clapiers, the marquis de Vauvenargues, attractively presented ina Niedree binding. This copy previously belonged toUstazade Silvestre de Sacy, of the Academie Francais, and was inscribed to him by the editor, D. - L. Gilbert. Ustazade was the son of the famous Antoine Isaac, the French linguist and orientalist. Ustazade was a literary and political contributor to Journal des Dbats. He became a curator at the Bibliothque Mazarine in 1836 and became its administrator in 1848. He was elected to the Acadmie franaise on 18 May 1854, and became a senator in 1865. Bound by Niedree of Paris in half morocco. The bookbinder's stamp can be found to the front blanks. Vauvenargues was a minor French noble, who, prior to his death from ill-health at 31, published a collection of essays and aphorisms at the encouragement of his friend Voltaire. While almost inevitably fairly obscure due to the brevity of his literary career, his works have attractedadmirers and interest ever since. Schopenhauer favorably quoted several of Vauvenargues sayings, including: la clart est la bonne foi des philosophes [clarity is the good faith of philosophers], from Reflections and Maxims, 729], and: personne n'est sujet a plus de fautes que ceux qui n'agissent que par reflexion [none are so prone to make mistakes as those who act only on reflection]. Condition: In a half morocco Niedree binding, with marbled boards. Externally excellent withonly some very light marking to the boards and very slight rubbing to the extremities. The text blocks are untrimmed, and the foredge of he first volume is lightly spotted. Internally with the bookbinder's stamp to the front blank of both volumes. The first volume has a contemporary ink inscription to the halftitle page. Both volumes are clean and bright throughout, with only a hint of cockling. Firmly bound.
