Collins, in Salisbury, London 1771 - 12mo, three volumes: pp. [i-iv] v-xv [xvi] 1-250 [251-252: blank]; [i-iv] 1-249 [250-252: blank]; [i-iv] 1-275 [276: blank], the three half title leaves and the final blanks in volumes 1 and 2 are present, full eighteenth-century full calf, spines ruled and numbered in gold, red leather title pieces. First edition. The last and the pleasantest of Smollett's novels, an epistolary road story. A mixed state (no known priority), mostly showing variants of Warburton, et al. A1 and A2; volume 1: title page misdated MDCLXXI, all signature marks set in lower case type, letter dated "Aug. 4" on page v, page vi correctly numbered, "respected sir" and "your . servant" on page ix, "Mrs. Gwyllim" on page 3 (as per A4, the Rothschild copy), page 147 correctly numbered; volume 2: "flag," page 2, line 3 and last word "this," page 2, line 7. Rothschild 1925. Tinker Library 1933. Grolier English 113. Early signature of Dedham, Massachusetts resident on the front flyleaf of volume one, small stamps of W. C. Day at bottom of title pages of volumes 2 and 3, later bookplates of Harold Greenhill affixed to paste-downs of all volumes.
