Wangenheim served in the American Revolution with the army corps of the Duke of Hessen- Kassel in 1777-83. During this period of mercenary service, he evidently found much time to study the trees of North America, and may have arranged to import trees to Germany. Afterward he worked for the Hessian forestry service, and later was in charge of the reforestation of the Polish provinces of Bialystock and Plock. This beautifully illustrated work describes American trees and shrubs introduced into cultivation in Germany, and includes descriptions of ninety- eight species. The preface is dated 1785, supporting the idea that the work is based directly on his experiences in America during the Revolution. TAXONOMIC LITERATURE 16633. SABIN 101238. NISSEN (BBI) 2105.
