General Sir William Howe's Orderly Book at - HOWE, Sir William - 1890. [1225638]
London: Benjamin Franklin Stevens, 1890 - Tall octavo. Original brown cloth, gilt lettered spine, top edges gilt, dark brown coated endpapers. Spine slightly rolled, a little wear to extremities of binding, shallow indentation close to lettering on spine. A very good copy. First edition, scarce in commerce and in British and Irish institutional libraries: Copac locating only the copy at the British Library; well represented in institutional libraries worldwide, but, according to OCLC, almost exclusively in the US. "This curious Orderly Book, which presents every detail of the administration and discipline of the English Army in the siege of Bosron, has been happily preserved for the use of historians, among the American manuscripts in the library of the Royal Institution, in London. [it] was begun on the day of the Battle of Bunker Hill" (Introduction). General "Billy" Howe (1729-1814) was one of the principal British commanders during the American War of Independence: "[he] was an accomplished soldier. In more than half a century of service he proved himself a knowledgeable and meticulous officer and a skilful commander. Yet because he did not end the American rebellion when it seemed most vulnerable he was widely criticized, and historians have continued to puzzle over his failure" (ODNB). Howe's meticulousness is certainly exhibited here and the extensive index matches his high standards in its attention to detail. [Attributes: First Edition]
