BORN AGAIN: A NOVEL - Lawson, Alfred William - 1904. [1225242]
Wox, Conrad Company Publishers [1904]., New York, Philadelphia - Octavo, pp. [1-4] 5-7 [8] 9-287 [288: blank], inserted frontispiece with photographic portrait of the author, original red cloth, front and spine panels stamped in white. First edition. This is the correct first printing. A later printing has a different frontispiece illustration and drops "Philadelphia" from the imprint on the title page. "One of the more eccentric of American fantasy novels. The bellicose hero, en route from Sydney to London, is pitched overboard in mid-Pacific by his exasperated shipmates, only to find land a few feet below the surface of the water. This leads him into an underground chamber where a huge diorama displays mysterious scenes from a lost continent, Sageland. On kissing the image of one of the women, the barefoot, seven-foot tall female comes to life. She is the last member of a utopian community that was extinguished 4000 years earlier." - Robert Eldridge. Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 1286. Sargent, British and American Utopian Literature, 1516-1985, p. 132. Reginald 08733. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978). Smith, American Fiction, 1901-1925 L-116. The fragile white stamping has perished from the faded spine panel but is almost entirely intact on the front panel; a very good copy of a rare and interesting book. (#148867) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
