Chapters from the Physical History of the - Nicols (Arthur) - 1880. [1224115]
C. Kegan Paul & Co 1880 - FIRST EDITION, THE AUTHOR'S COPY, numerous illustrations in the text, 1 gathering loose, some thumbing, browning and spotting, pp. xiv, leaf with Opinions of the Press tipped in before final leaf of the gathering, 281, 32 (ads), 8vo, original dark green pebble-grained cloth with a dinosaur footprint blocked in blind of the upper cover, spine gilt lettered, a little worn and marked, the author's copy, extensively marked up by him with correction, details as to the composition of the volume and its publications, with inserted notes, press cuttings, &c, &c, good. Nicols, a correspondent of Darwin's, an FGS and an FRGS, was a populariser of science. His oeuvre includes a novel set in Queensland, featurung its natural history. The present work is thoroughgoing and up to date, but Nicols hedges on evolution, believing it to be a useful working hypothesis, which may 'at some future time be abandoned, as have many successive astronomical theories.' He quotes the conclusion of Darwin's Origin of Species, which itself is special pleading to stay the wrath of creationists. This copy is a remarkable example of a proud author's copy of his, not entirely successful, book. Among the facts recorded in Nicols' notes are its printing and sales history: 1,000 copies were printed for the sum of £194/12/0 and nearly 600 were sold in the first year for a total of £131/11/5. The last note is: 197 on hand in December 1884. The notes to the text run the gamut of typographical errors corrected, phraseology amended, sources noted, interpolations introduced. It was evidently 'work in progress' for quite some time. The recipients of presentation copies are listed. They include W.E. Gladstone, Hugh Dalziel (authority on dogs), and George Du Maurier - whose first career was as a scientist, and he later had an interest in Darwinism.
