'In its own age 'The Mysteries of Udolpho' was one of the most popular of all Gothic novels, and it has never entirely lost its appeal.' (Cambridge Guide) It entirely overshadowed Mrs. Radcliffe's earlier three novels, and she was paid the then enormous sum of £500.
