Through the Yangtsze Gorges a souvenir album - R. Koke - 1930. 
Kelly & Walsh, Limited 1930 - Through the Yangtsze Gorges, by R. Koke, published circa 1930's by Kelly & Walsh, Limited. 7 1/8 x 9 1/8"; bound with black string ties through 4 holes, decorated silk covered boards embossed with title in black, in original paperboard slipcase. Slipcase soiled in places and has some splits at spine and some damage to slipcase spine (see image) not affecting book. Spine of slipcase printed with book title. Slipcase inscribed "with best wishes from Charles William" (?) Xmas 1936 (see image). Silk decorated covers near fine, with only some sunfading to edges not protected by slipcase and the slightest rubbing at corners from ins and outs from slipcase. Interior near fine to fine containing 20 photographic images printed on heavy paper and individually mounted on imitation parchment style paper, much in the style of the various "Vandyck" photogravure books (though this is not one of those). Each page with printed name of the sight and the mileage along the river. Printed on second page: "These photographs were taken by MR. R. KOKE (late of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) during a trip through the Yangtsze Gorges undertaken on behalf of JARDINE, MATHESON & CO., LTD. General Managers THE INDO-CHINA S. N. CO., Ltd." The author, Robert A. Koke, was born in Pasadena, Calif., and attended the University of California at Los Angeles. After working on the production staff at MGM studios, he traveled to Bali in 1936 and with his wife Louise opened a hotel. He fled the island during World War II, ahead of invading Japanese forces. During the war, he served with the Army and the Office of Strategic Services. Stationed on the island of Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, he helped train and dispatch intelligence agents to the Japanese-held islands of Indonesia. He remained in intelligence after the war and joined the CIA when it was established in 1947. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
