Published By James Lovegrove/ John D. Toy, Printer, Baltimore 1823 - Lithograph color; -24, - pp,  plates pages; [Timber Merchant Guide/Lithographs] errata slip. 1st edition of the 2nd book printed in the United States to contain lithographs (preceded by James Edward Smith's Grammar of Botany in 1821). Hand-colored lithographed plates by Henry Stone. All but the last plate show portions of tree trunks as corresponding to various beams and pieces of lumber, typically with a numerical table in the lower right portion of the plate. Pages -10 advocate government restriction as a means of conserving timber. Warns that lumber would need to be imported in the future (p7, last paragraph). Pp. 11-14 describe use of wood for ship and galley building in ancient times. This is followed by use in modern shipbuilding, then the table. Contemp leather worn. Front cover partly detached. Dampstaining to text and usually to margin of plates, overlapping a few images. 2nd US book printed with lithographs, very early example of conservation efforts, historical refences to lumber usage. ; 0 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
