Written by Alberto Castellani (c.1460 - 1552), a Venetian Dominican, this work was first published in 1523. It quickly gained considerable popularity, and was reprinted more than twenty times during the 16th century. The book was a part of Pope Leo X enterprise to standardize and codify the rituals of the Roman Catholic Church. The book contains services for the Sacraments (baptism, marriage, penance, eucharist, extreme unction, visitation of the sick, attendance on the dying, and office of the dead); blessings and processions. Also included is an anonymous treatise on music theory: Compendium Musices and a section on exorcism: Contra Demoniacos. This work was used extensively by missionaries in South America and later in Japan; the rites for adult baptism being particulary useful. A very good copy of a rare and beautifully printed liturgical manual.
