Pale Fire - Nabokov, Vladimir - 1994.
The Arion Press, San Francisco 1994 - No. 195 of 200 (plus 26 HC). Vladimir Nabokov (1899-1977), perhaps best known for Lolita, was a finalist for the National Book Award for Fiction seven times. This work, Pale Fire, is presented as a 999-line poem written by a fictional poet; accompanied by a foreword and lengthy commentary by a fictional author, the two together form the novel. Not surprisingly, its critical reception was diverse; however, the work is included in several lists of "most important books" including Time Magazine's list of the 100 best English-language novels published since 1923. The Arion Press imaginatively solved the work's biggest challenge, establishing for the first time the lineation of the poem with a small companion volume which conforms to the set of index cards described as its manuscript in the novel. (N.B., above info from Wiki and Arion Press web site.) ***DESCRIPTION: Both volumes are bound in full purple changeable silk cloth, with inset gold cloth disks for gold titling; published in a limited edition of only 200 copies (plus 26 HC), both volumes being no. 195. The smaller companion volume is on lined paper which simulates index cards, using the same type and paper as the main volume; oblong (4" tall by 6" wide), pagination: (i-ii), 1-80, colophon (81).
