The Works Of Aphra Behn - Aphra Behn - 1915. [1221940]
London & Stratford on Avon- William Heinemann & A H Bullen 1915 - A first edition of the complete works of Aphra Behn, one of 50 copies printed on handmade paper. Aphra Behn was an English writer from the 17th century. She was an extraordinary woman -one of the first to earn her living from writing. She came to the attention of the King, who employed her as a spy in Holland. After her return and a spell in debtors' prison, she began writing for the stage under the pseudonym Astrea. She isnow regarded as one of the most important dramatists of the 17th century, and her prose is considered to havebeen highly influential in the development of the English novel. She was contraversial in her exploration of sexuality, race, gender, and homoeroticism. She acknowledged herself that her works would not have been so problematic for society had she been a man. In Virginia Woolf'sA Room of One's Own it is famously said that, All women together ought to let flowers fall upon the tomb of Aphra Behn which is, most scandalously, but rather appropriately, in Westminster Abbey. This is the first collected edition of Aphra Behn, and includes a frontispiece and a plate showing one of her original maunscripts in the introduction in volume one. This is number 10 of 50 copies printed on handmade paper. Direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD (1906-1973) a noted book collector and diarist. Collated: completeCondition: In a cloth binding with paper covered boards. Externally sound with some light bumping to the extremities and a little light marking to the boards and spines. The spine labels are age toned. In the case of volumes I & V there is marking to the spine labels. The spine label of IV is chipped in one place. The text blocks are untrimmed and the edges are a little dusty. In all the volumes the pages are more often than not uncut along the top or foredge. With a stamp from the Selbourne collection to the reverse of the title pages. Clean and bright throughout, and firmly bound. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
