Sold with large poster and postcard versions of the first two images.Evelyn Stuart Hardy (1866-1935) came from a family of Bristol artists, and received her first commission aged 9. She is best known for illustrations that appeared in children's books, many undertaken for the publisher Ernest Nister in the period 1890-1910. The first of the present watercolours shows a composite scene of explorers in the Arctic, with a ship fast in the background ice, and men in the foreground getting ready for a sledging trip, two others butchering a polar bear. The two other images depict Eskimo village scenes, the first with a woman and children, and second with a man and husky team setting off. These images appeared on postcards and posters printed by the London firm A. B. Shaw & Co. Ltd. for their "Child Life" series; the images were also used by the All-British Picture Co. Ltd. We have not been able to determine whether the images were also used a book illustrations.
