Moscovia Urbs Metropolis Totius RussiƦ AlbƦ - BRAUN, Georg & HOGENBERG, Frans - 1617. [1220934]
1617 - Cologne, 1618, French text edition. Original colour. 350 x 460mm. A highly decorative map of Moscow, the second plan of the city to be included in Braun & Hogenberg's 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum'. It appears in the sixth and last volume, first published 1617 (45 years after the first volume), and was necessary because the Poles had destroyed much of the city in 1611. The new plan shows a much-expanded city, with three rings of defensive walls: the original showed little more than the Kremlin. To the right is a twenty-point key; above the map are the title and two armorials; and in the bottom left corner is a musketeer with a lit taper.
