Heidelberg- Carl Winters Verlag 1919 - A collection of hand-coloured plates mounted on to card. Collated, complete with 28 plates to the first portfolio and 25 to the second. Examples of plates from differentdesigns of woodcuts and different woodcut makersto show the development of printing. Each portfoliocontains a range of plates from a select few textsas well asdifferent stylesin order to convey the progress of illustrations andof woodcuts. The first 7 plates to the first portfolio are from woodcuts byPetrarca Meister, based in Augsburg. Theplates are from the woodcuts they produced for Von der Artzney BayderGluck,1532. Plates 8-18 of the first portfolio are by Rodericus Zamorensis for Spiegel des Menschlichen Lebens, Ausberg 1479. Plates 19-28 are by Aus Rolevinck for Fasciculus Temporum, Strasburg, 1493. To portfolio II plates 29-34 are by Erhardus Ratdolt for Sternbilder aus Albumasar's Introductorium in Astronomiam Oder Flores Albumasaris, 1489. Plates 35-38 of portfolio II indicate red and black plates. Plates 39-44 show yellow and red illustrationswhilst plates 45-53 are ofYellow, red and Greenillustrations. Each platehaslisted what text they are from and theyear. All descriptions are written in German. Condition: In original half cloth portfolio bindings. Externally, both are worn to the spine and particularly to the joints. Backstrips are lifting to both volumes. All joints to both volumes are starting but firm. Internally, the plates are secure in the portfolios and securely mounted on their individual black card. Plates are bright and clean. Overall: VERY GOOD. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
