Die Grundlage der allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie - EINSTEIN, ALBERT - 1916.
Leipzig, Ambrosius Barth 1916 - Die Grundlage der allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie. EINSTEIN, ALBERT. Signed twice by Einstein. 23,500.00 Leipzig, Ambrosius Barth, 1916. 64 pages. First edition of Einstein's breathtakingly counter-intuitive view of the world in which space and time are malleable and matter and energy are interchangeable. This is the true separate printing in its original wrappers and not an offprint of the Annalen der Physik. Both front and rear covers are yellowed and chipped and the title page was apparently torn at some time but has been reattached with a slight scar left behind. (please see pix). This separate printing has been bound into a half-leather book from the library of Dr. Friedrich Brandstetter of the Brandstetter family of publishers of scientific works, primarily for children. His ex libris is on the back of the cover that was signed by Einstein. Einstein's two signatures are somewhat faded, but legible. In fact, you can see why Einstein signed this book two times for Brandstetter: his fountain pen glopped his name not once but twice. The close-up on his signatures makes it seem like Einstein's trouble with his pen has just taken place; it almost enlivens the book. I can imagine his frustration. Provenance: I acquired this book from the Brandstetter family descendants via a German auction house a number of years ago and am putting it on the market today. This is an opportunity to own a signed first edition of a seminal work of the twentieth century. If you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them for you - and thanks for taking the time to peruse this offering!
