Title-page dated 1760 but Madan's Preface dated Jan. 15, 1761. 34.5 cm x 22.5 cm, pp. irregular pagination, complete with register continuous: [vi], 717,  - Index of names. 53 engraved plates including frontispiece and engraved title-page, many containing double illustrations, many of the copper-plates were engraved by Thomas Bowles. From the library of the Canadian literary giant, Robertson Davies, with his heraldic bookplate to the front pastedown. Contemporary half-leather and boards, six raised bands, gilt-stamped maroon leather spine label, original head and tail bands intact. Covers quite worn, scuffed, and rubbed, corners rubbed and rounded. May lack front free endpaper(?), frontispiece detached but present, otherwise interior and plates wonderfully clean and bright. An immediate best-seller when first published in English in 1563. the book was highly influential in England and Scotland and helped shape lasting popular notions of Catholicism there.. Hard Cover.
