London: George Virtue,, 1838. In a Series of Views Taken Expressly for this Work by T. Allom, W. H. Bartlett, and H. McCulloch. 2 volumes, quarto (260 x 204 mm). Contemporary blue full calf, spines richly gilt with laurel wreaths enclosing titles, thistles, a claymore and tartan motif, and components of the Stuart arms, complete Stuart arms gilt to covers within elaborate tartan drapery borders incorporating armorial motifs, thistles and lion's heads, all within broad blind frames, all edges gilt, inner dentelles gilt, yellow surface-paper endpapers. Engraved half-title to each volume, folding map, 118 plates with tissue guards. Engraved bookplate of Jean Bocquet to the front pastedowns ("Macchi states; Jean Bocquet, born in Mons, had a rich library", BL Database of Bookbindings, online). Extremities lightly rubbed, a few faint scuffs to covers, mild foxing to plates, short closed tear to map fold not affecting image. A very good copy. First edition, in a fine Scottish binding. One of several works by William Beattie (1793?1875), Scotland Illustrated includes historical and topographical descriptions of Scottish sites and landscapes, accompanied by numerous engraved views, of which 91 are by Allom, whose "drawings are full of little touches which redeem his landscapes from formality" (Hunnisett, p. 109). French and German translations were published later the same year.
