Murphy Jamboree and National Barn Dance Radio - Buttram, Pat; Red Blanchard; Ril - 1943.
Chicago: WLS Radio, (1943-1947). Hardcover Hardcover. Near Fine. Approximately 700 leaves. 8-1/2 by 11 inches. A bound collection of more than 60 spirit duplicated continuity scripts for WLS, Chicago, radio programs. The majority of the scripts are for the Murphy Jamboree, a weekly music show aimed at farmers and sponsored by the Murphy Products Company, of Burlington, Wisconsin. The show featured country and hillbilly acts, like the Sackett Sisters, the Sage Riders, and Rex Allen. It was intersperced with sketch comedy. The scripts, typically 8 pages, probably originated in the files of Riley Jackson, a producer at WLS. Included are seven scripts from December 1942 and January 1943; a continuous run (with a few duplicates) of 59 shows from March 9, 1946 to April 26, 1947; three scripts from popular radio variety show National Barn Dance (July 13, 20, and 27, 1946), and three leaves with a typed script for Pat Buttram ('the pride of Winston County'). Also bound in is a version of the Abbott and Costello routine, Who's on First', written for Buttram, probably for National Barn Dance. Joe Buttram, who went on to act in Green Acres and Gene Autry's TV and radio shows, appears in about half the scripts, leaving WLS in 1946 to work with Autry. A scarce and substantial run of scripts for a popular show that was listened to throughout the rural Midwest. Near fine.
