Les Metamorphoses d'Ouide, De nouveau traduites - Publius Ovidius Naso - 1622. [1218904]
An extremely rare edition of the Renouard translation. Folio, 335x220mm. Recently re-bound by Flora Ginn in burgundy morocco with gilt-outlined panels on the boards and floral corner-pieces. Decorative gilt roll on the edge of the boards and inner gilt rolls. Five raised bands on spine with ornate gilt decoration in the compartments and burgundy lettering-piece. Marbled end-papers. [16], 629 [i.e.627], [1] pages, with various misprints and errors in pagination (1-52, 55-166, 169-516, 515-629); signatures: [1], A, Aiii, aiiii, e4, A-Z6, Aa-Zz6, Aaa-Fff6, Ggg2. The text is continuous. This copy begins as follows. Sig. [1] engraved title-page, close cropped at head, signed 'I. Briot fecit 1622'; 'No:81' manuscript in top-right corner of the plate and 'J Hill' manuscript in lower margin. Sig. A 'Au Roy', signed: Guillemot. Sig. Aiii 'A La France', signed: N. Renouard. Sigs aiiii-eiii 'Elegie Pour Ovide'; the head-piece on aiiii is printed upside down. Sig. eiii verso to eiiii recto 'A Monsieur Renovard'. Sig. eiiii verso 'Stances'. The main text follows. Illustrated with 134 quarter-page woodcuts within the text, all bright and sharp. There are also over 40 splendid head-pieces, the full width of the text and 50mm deep, comprising processions of carts, chariots and wagons trundling across the pages, crowded with figures and tribute, plus bullocks, mules and their riders. Some transfer from the plates in places. Elegant historiated capitals throughout. The engravings are catalogued by V&A Libraries as: 'Engr., some by I. Briot, incl. title-page head-pieces and initials'; the Courtauld Institute of Art catalogue says 'Engraved t.-p., headpieces and 134 engravings after Crispin van der Passe', [Passe, Crispijn van de, d. 1670]. Leaf Gg3 (pp. 357-8) reproduced in sympathetic facsimile from the copy in the University of London library. Paper restoration to C2 (p. 27), K4 (p.117), Q5 (p.193) and Ee4 (p.335) all without loss. Small tear in lower margin of eiiii, not affecting text. Slight worming in top foredge corner from E3 to G4 (pp.55-81), affecting the page number in places. Slight browning in gutter margin of 3G2 (p.269). Occasional sepia ink spotting. COPAC reports only three copies in UK libraries; in addition WorldCat shows a single copy in France.
