Bunten Filmbinder / Moderne Schönheitsgalerie. - (CIGARETTE CARDS -- GERMAN -- - 9999.
Berlin: Cigarettenfabrik Josetti / "Bilderdienst" Berlin-Pankow, n.y.. Complete sets of three numbered cigarette card collections -- 275, 300 and 300 -- for a total of 875 color cards, undated but of 1930s vintage, neatly mounted at two corners each (each fully and easily removable) in a folio period hardbound "Scrap Book." Each card glossy 2" X 2 3/8". Album very good, cards near fine to very good. Very occasional faint edgewear, but overall bright and quite handsome. Incredible large grouping of three full sets numbering 275 cards (Cigarettenfabrik Josetti's "Unsere Bunten Filmbilder" series), 300 cards and 300 cards each (both"Bilderdienst" Berlin-Pankow's "Moderne Schönheitsgalerie" series), mounted alphabetically 20 cards per page by the star's last name, not numerically. All cards in these series are bright, vividly colored, usually with gilt borders and full color individual portraits, usually head-and-shoulders glamour poses but sometimes full-length portraits. Occasionally stars will be pictured in pairs -- i.e. Delores Del Rio and Gene Raymond or Mary Duncan and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. Being German series, all of your major German film stars of the era are well depicted, along with many character actors, but also a good many American and English stars also appear. Quite often the major stars may have two or more images devoted to them -- Marlene Dietrich has a dozen images, no two alike. The verso of all cards features text about the series and the individual card's number, as well as the total number of cards in the series. These large series are seldom seen complete -- and three such complete series, all in outstanding condition and together in one album, is exceptionally unusual.
