PIERRE L'EBOURIFFE Joyeuses Histoires et - HOFFMANN, Heinrich ). Translated by T - 1912.
Paris Librairie Fischbacher S.A. printed by Auguste Weisbrod Francfort 1912 - REPRINT 1912 (dated on lower cover), small 4to, 263 x 208 mm, 10¼ x 8¼, French text, red cloth spine, buff boards with hand coloured repeat of title page, publisher's adverts to lower board. Hand coloured title illustration (repeating illustration on page 1 of the original except that centre illustration at lower edge of Gaspard seated at the table is replaced by the publisher's imprint). 24 pages of hand coloured illustrations. This Struwwelpeter is notable for having a huge mass of straight hair hanging down to his ankles. Edges of covers just very slightly darkened, slightest wear to corners, contents exceptionally clean and bright. Near Fine excellent copy of a title scarce in any edition. French version of Struwwelpeter following the original illustrations quite closely. First published in 1860, Fischbacher was still publishing this version in 1929 (see BNF). The early French editions stated that it was translated from the German of Dr Hoffmann, but for obvious reasons from 1872 onwards this this information was dropped. Not in Baumgartner. The illustration of Pierre on page 2 is very close to the second design made by Hoffmann in 1858 (for image of Pierre see Bilderwelt page 238, but this shows the 1929 cover which is quite different from our copy). 'Regardez un peu, le voici:/Pierre l'Ebouriffe! Fi! Fi!/Quand on veut lui peigner la tete/Le sale dit: Non! et s'entete.' MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE. FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
