The Midnight Parasites (Original poster for - Kuri, Yoji (director) - 1972.
Tokyo: Animation-Film, 1972. Original poster for the 1972 Japanese animated short film depicting a surreal landscape filled with danger, murder, and odd reproduction. From the collection of noted film historian Amos Vogel.Kuri, a Japanese cartoonist and independent filmmaker, is perhaps the most important figures in the history of Japanese independent animation. He was the unofficial leader and most prolific of the "Animation Association of Three" collective who kick-started the renaissance of modern styled, independently made, adult aimed animation in early 1960s Japan. He is known internationally for the very black comedy of his films, with the intentionally naïve style of his cartooning often belying the surreal, obscene, and disturbing situations they depict. In the 1960s Kuri became a favorite among fervently counter-cultural audiences, including filmmakers such as René Laloux. In 1967, Ralph Stephenson, somewhat hyperbolically, called the director "the only Japanese animator whose work is known in the West. 21.5 x 31 inches, thus non-standard size, though most resembling a Japanese B2 format (20 x 28 inches). Rolled, Near Fine.
