The Adventures of Captain Bonneville, or - IRVING, Washington - 1837.
Contemp. half calf, spines gilt in compartments, brown & maroon leather labels. Published the same year as the first American edition. This is an account of the Western frontiers of the United States, and draws heavily upon the accounts of Benjamin Louis Eulalie de Bonneville, 1796-1878, a French-born soldier explorer and prospector, an early hero of the American West. Irving had met Bonneville a couple of years previously, and encouraged him to part with his log book and maps, which formed the basis for this book.
