London: Faber and Faber, 1940 - Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine in red. With the dust jacket. Spine a little rolled, edges of text block slightly spotted. An excellent copy in a lightly toned, rubbed and edge-chipped jacket with two small ink marks to front panel. First edition, first printing. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "To my dear friend Eric Gillett who was exceptionally kind to me when I was utterly unknown, CPS, 19. ii - 45". Eric Gillett (1893–1978) was a literary critic, publisher and broadcaster. During the first world war he served as a captain in the Lancashire Fusiliers and was wounded at Ypres. He published and edited a number of literary anthologies and wrote reviews for the Daily Telegraph and The Times. Gillet was a regular contributor to the BBC (he appeared on over 2,000 radio programmes) and "one of the pioneers of talking about books on the air" (The Radleian 1979, p. 61).
