The Nests and Eggs of Indian Birds, in 3 - Hume, Allan O. (and Oates, Eugene Wil - 1889.
London: R.H. Porter, 1889-1890. Second edition.. Some foxing to the endpapers only, the text and portrait plates as well as the original cloth binding are very bright and clean; an attractive copy in near fine condition.. Pp. xi, 397, (2, ads); pp, ix, 420; pp. x, 461; 12 portraits of prominent ornithologists (4 in each volume as called for). Publisher's original brown cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine, lg 8vo. This second edition is much revised and enlarged (the first edition was published in 1873-1875 in a single volume). According to Zimmer (pg. 315), Oates was also writing the bird volumes in The Fauna of British India series at the same time he was completed the present work. A number of new species he describes in the Fauna series were first listed in the revised second edition of The Nests and Eggs of Indian Birds. Since the latter set appeared before the publication of the Fauna series volumes, the present work takes on unexpected taxonomic significance. Oates took on the revision and enlargement of the second because Hume had lost interest in ornithology due to the loss of a manuscript that was to be his magnum opus on the birds of India. A notable ornithologist, Hume has been called "the Father of Indian Ornithology" and, by those who found him dogmatic, "the Pope of Indian ornithology (from Wiki).
