Saint Joan of Arc - TWAIN, Mark [pseud. Samuel Clemens]; Howard - 1919. [1216103]
Harper & Brothers Publishers [1919], New York - Considerably abridge edition for children of Twain's 1896 novel Recollections of the Life of Joan of Arc, this version first appearing in the collection $30,000, Bequest (1906). Presumably this edition was published thanks to a resurgence of interest in the Maid of Orléans during World War I--indeed, Joan of Arc would be canonized the following year by Pope Benedict XV. BAL 3683. First state with illustrated endpapers and p. 18 decoration correctly positioned. Small, slim quarto (24cm.); original cloth, color plate mounted to upper cover, top edge gilt, in grey pictorial dust jacket with a detail from the same plate mounted to upper panel; xiii,[3],32pp.; tipped in color frontispiece and 3 plates, text printed within pale green decorative pictorial borders. Jacket extremities a bit shelf-worn, some minor tape repair to verso, else a Very Good and sound copy. [Attributes: First Edition]
