Four volumes bound in 2, with 144 lovely hand colored botanical engravings, which were not only drawn and engraved by Frederick Nodder, but also colored under his direction. The plates are extremely bright and fresh, the color vivid. Frederick P. Nodder (born 1770) was a botanical draughtsman employed by Sir Joseph Banks to make the finished drawings (from Sydney Parkinson's sketches), of the plants collected during Cook's first voyage round the world. Thomas Martyn, the author, was a fellow of the Linnean Society and professor of botany at Cambridge. Bound in full highly ornate brown contemporary marbled calf. 8vo, unpaginated . Vol. I: Title, Dedication, Preface, Authors Quoted, Explanation of terms, plates and text 1 - 72; Index of Latin names, Index of English names. Vol II: Title, plates and text 73 - 144, Index of Latin names, Index of English names. Front board currently detached, otherwise the set is in very good condition.
