New York: Random House, 1952 - Octavo. Original black and buff cloth, title to spine white, decoration to spine black. With the dust jacket. Some minor spotting to endleaves and edges. An excellent copy in the rubbed jacket with some minor creasing, shallow chips to extremities, partial split to joints repaired on verso. First edition, first printing. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author to the writer and publisher Frank Sheed (1897-1981) on the front free endpaper, "For Frank Sheed, who impresses me as being that rare man who not only publishes books but who also reads them - sincerely, Ralph Ellison. May, 1952." Sheed, an Australian-born lawyer, created the imprint Sheed & Ward with his wife, Masie Ward, publishing authors such as G. K. Chesterton, Hilaire Belloc, Evelyn Waugh, and Ronald Knox. This novel, Ellison's first, won the National Book Award in 1953 and was named one of the 100 Best Novels of the twentieth-century by Time magazine and The Modern Library.
