FIRST EDITION 1908. 4to, 295 x 210 mm, 11Â½ x 8 inches, 108 plates mostly full page, 16 in colour with tissue guards captioned in red, 2 are folding, 5 maps, pages: xix, 1-548 including bibliography and index, original publisher's cloth, heavily decorated with gilt on spine and upper cover, gilt lettering, gilt top edges, other edges untrimmed. Binding rubbed, soiled and slightly grubby, some gilt rubbed away, some wear to upper hinge, 1 tear has been reapired, small crack to foot of upper hinge, some turning creases to top corners, small nick to edge of outer margin of half-title and last endpaper, corners sligtly worn, 2 outer edges have small closed tears neatly repaired, nowhere near text, LACKS COLOUR FRONTISPIECE REPLACED WITH A REASONABLE FACSIMILE, first endpaper replaced, half-title and endpapers faintly browned, a good copy only. See John Sinkankas, Gemology An Annotated Bibliography, Volume 2, page 584, No. 3691: "The text covers the entire span of ancient to modern knowledge of the pearl, its host, formation, the natural history of several shellfish, salt- and fresh-water, methods of fishing, preparation of pearls, marketing, fashion, lore, and many other topics directly or indirectly related to the central theme. Scarcely any aspect is neglected in this truly monumental work which remains indispensable both for the student interested in the strictly scientific aspects and the one interested in the sociological/cultural aspects". It is prized also "for the large number of high quality illustrations in colour and in black-and-white". This is a very heavy book and will require extra postage costs.
