Adria Illustrierte. Year I, Nos. 7, 9-12 - - 1944.
Twelve issues (out of an approximate 54 total published), each issue 16 pp., of the short-lived multilingual German propaganda periodical aimed at both the soldiers stationed in the German-occupied Adriatic Coast and the resident civilian population, composed primarily of photo essays and collages with captions in printed in German, Italian, Croatian, and Slovenian, meant to convey that local traditions and a quiet way of life could coexist in the occupied territory even in wartime, with depictions including soldiers, military activities, schoolchildren, art, working women, fishermen, festivals, dancing, and sports and leisure. Illustrated profusely throughout. Folio. Illustrated self-wrpps., loose as issued, currently housed in an archival box. Age-darkening and scattered toning, some bumping to extremities, some issues with tears along spine, Year II, no. 8 with the cover completely loose from rest of issue. Trieste (Adria-Verlag) 1944-1945. After the defection of Italy in 1943, German troops moved in to occupy part of the peninsula. The Gauleiter Friedrich Rainer had the idea to publish a magazine specifically for the occupation forces and the occupants of the region. Similar publications existed which already reported on local news and events of the war, such as "Die Wehrmacht", "Der Adler", and "Deutsche Adria-Zeitung", but these publications were limited to German language speakers. By printing Adria Illustrierte in all four of the languages spoken in the occupied region, the goal was to reach a wider audience. The final issue was published on April 28, 1945. While the vast majority of German publications were obligated to stop printing at the end of the summer of 1944, Adria Illustrierte continued, making it possibly the last German publication still in circulation at the end of the war. An incredibly scarce collection of an important WWII publication; as of December 2015, WorldCat does not locate a single holding in North America.
