Farthest North: The Voyage of Exploration - NANSEN, Fridtjof - 1897.
A. Constable & Co, Westminster, 1897 - 1st edition. Hardcover. The first English issue (Newnes was the following year) of Nansen's great polar exploration. Original green cloth, spines and front boards lettered in gilt with gilt illustration to front of each, slightly bumped extremities, tight bindings, a few small marks, but generally in very good order. Title-pages lettered in red and black, nearly 1200 pages in all, mostly very clean with only occasional light spotting, many pages still uncut. Sixteen colour plates taken from Nansen's own sketches, c. 120 full-page plates, many other illustrations in text, four folding colour maps, two in each volume (in excellent condition). Included is a laid-in card with the author's signature, taken from a 200-copy printing of an album of autographs for charity organised by the Duchess of Albany in 1906. In sum, a very good copy of the first English issue of Nansen's important expedition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
