London: Faber and Faber, 1947. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With the dust jacket. Spine lightly sunned, very faint isolated mottling to cloth, a few mild spots to edges, contents toned. A very good copy in the lightly soiled dust jacket with a tanned and chipped spine panel (costing half a word in the title), a closed tear to the foot of the front joint, and a few other mild nicks and tears. First edition, first impression. A significant association copy of the second book in Snow's Strangers and Brothers series, inscribed by the author "To my friend Eric Gillett, whose friendship has been a support to me for nearly twenty years, CPS, 19 ii 49, CP Snow" on the front free endpaper. Eric Gillett (1893-1978) was a "literary critic and also an early film critic, although his principal post was as a senior editor at Collins ? [He was] for a while the professor of English Language and Literature at the Raffles University in Singapore. He went on to be a literary critic for The Daily Telegraph, and produced/ edited a stream of anthologies, literary surveys, books about film for adults and children, two biographies, and to appear on 2,000 occasions for the BBC, Radio Luxemburg, Radio Normandie and the Swedish and Dutch networks" (New Statesman, online, accessed 24/8/2016).
