THE MYTH OF OEDIPUS - Seligmann, Kurt - 1944. [1214574]
Durlacher Bros. - R. Kirk Askew Jr 1944 - 1st ed, limited to 50 numbered copies signed by the author / artist, this being #16. Atlas folio ( 24 inches ). Printed and illustrated paper over flexible boards. Complete with end papers, five leaves folded to make ten text pages and six etchings with tissue guards, the frontispiece etching signed and dated by Seligmann, all laid into the covers. The front and rear covers are moderately to lightly stained at the upper third of the spine, chipped at head and heel. The paper at the bottom edge has mostly worn away. The front blank laid in end papers are pretty heavily stained at the fold, the rear much less so. The text leaves consist of the half-title, title page, text of the work, plate list and signed justification page. The upper part of the text leaves have some light to moderate discoloring at upper part of the fold, most heavily at the half title. A few of the etchings are lightly affected with some light toning on the upper left side of the blank edge of three of them. The frontispiece has one small fox spot on the blank upper edge. The front cover and end papers took most of the staining with it quickly becoming much less further in. To sum up: the covers are Good, the end papers stained at the fold, the text leaves moderately to lightly stained at the fold with the half-title the worst, a few of the etchings are slightly affected on the blank left edge. In what looks to be it's original plain white mailing box which is stained and worn. A beautifully produced work on J. Whatman handmade paper. Considered to be the artist's masterpiece and one of the greatest works of Surrealist printmaking. A very difficult work to find complete as many copies have been broken for the plates. More photos on request. Please note: this will only be shipped to an address in the United States. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
