First edition. The American edition, published in October 1872, preceded the British edition published in December 1872 with a title page dated 1873. Lizzie Greystock, the quite unscrupulous and completely selfish widow of Sir Florian Eustace is determined to keep a diamond necklace which his relatives have claimed as a family heirloom. The novel "was popular with readers, and shows Trollope adopting some of the detective story tricks of Wilkie Collins's THE MOONSTONE." - Sutherland, Victorian Fiction, pp. 216-7. Cloth rubbed at edges, mostly at spine ends and corner tips, several mild scuffs to cloth, a very good copy with bright gold stamping. Presents well overall.
