The Gallery of Byron Beauties; Portraits - BYRONIANA : HAND-COLOURED PLATES : By - 1835.
David Bogue, London - London: David Bogue, Fleet Street, no date [but circa. 1835-1840]. pp. (excluding plates but including all the various blank leaves). Illustrated with THIRTY-NINE HAND-COLOURED PLATES (complete as list). §David Bogue published from the shop of his employer Charles Tilt at 86 Fleet Street from 1835 or 1836, sometimes under his own name and sometimes under the Tilt and Bogue imprint. He became Tilt's business partner in 1840 (ODNB), the latter retiring in 1843. The work - comprising plates with facing text by the poet & explanatory notes - was reprinted on a few occasions until at least 1871 (latter under a North American imprint). Almost all surviving copies are uncoloured. Copac lists only one copy of any edition: Senate House (the Durning-Lawrence copy), described as 'London: Tilt and Bogue . ', but the state of the plates unmentioned. The copy offered, although undated and with no edition statement, appears to have been issued at this time, and seems to be one of the 'highly coloured' copies advertised for sale 'handsomely bound in morocco' at £3 in The Book of Facts (1839) - (uncoloured copies 31s. 6d.) - and at the same price (i.e. 60s.) in The Athenaeum, No. 903 (February, 1845). Occasional scattered foxing to rear of plates, and once or twice very slightly to images. Discreet paper repair to lower corner of title-page, and several similar to text or blanks. Small loss to corners or edge of a few plates neatly repaired, and one larger repair to creases/loss to lower corner of the plate Parisina (see photo.). Dimensions: 24 x 16.5 cm., approx. Original maroon morocco, elaborately decorated in gilt, gilt lettering, all edges gilt, EXPERTLY REBACKED in matching style with maroon endpapers. A very good, bright copy. (Further images available on request). RARE. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
