Lightly rubbed, tips bumped, headcap chipped, scattered pale marking to cloth, the very occasional marginal spot or mark, a very good copy. Frontispiece and 12 plates. First edition, first printing, signed by the illustrator on the front free endpaper; a collection of Wharton's impressionist essays on Italian architecture, landscapes and daily life, praised on publication for its "brilliant style, historic research, and a catholicity of taste" (Nation, 80, 22 June 1905, 508).
