LES JARDINS. Plans et Vues DessinEs Par Verdeau - VERA, André - 1919.
Paris: Émile-Paul 1919. No. VIII of 27 numbered copies on papier de Chine with an accomp anying suite of engravings (from a total edition of 537 copies). Illustrated with plans and views by Paul Vera and Verdeau as well as wood block vignettes engraved by Paul Vera. The Vera brothers worked together on most of their garden projects, including their influential books on garden design. LES JARDINS presents designs for a variety of gardens in the bold, formal, geometrical style of Art Deco, heavily influenced by cubism and modernist art theory, which they helped to establish. The printed volume itself, with its modern woodblocks by Paul Vera, offers a striking graphic presentation of these ideas as well as being an excellent example of modern French book design with the entire "mise en page" directed by Paul Vera. It was printed at the press of la Maison Keller. Ganay 404 4to (32 x 24 cm); 5-161 pp. including 24 plates (mostly plans and garden views) as well as numerous wood block vignettes and text decorations; with separate portfolio containing a suite of 52 leaves with all of the wood vignettes from the text. Original decoratively printed paper wrappers, clean and bright, in original glassine, but upper cover and preliminary pages detached from spine; pages unopened; infrequent pale foxing to portions of text; some some minor original paper flaws, including a small (2 x .5 cm) hole in one of the text illustrations; original untitled paper portfolio for the extra suite of plates; one leaf wrinkled, infrequent very light spotting. .
