Saigon d'après nature by E. Postal. 1890 - POSTAL, E - 1890. [1204064]
1890 - ?Vietnam, c.1890. Lithograph, sheet 375 x 505mm. Minor restoration in sky area. An elevated view Saigon, then the capital of the French colony of Cochinchina. It shows the layout of the European city, with factoriers and steamships on the Mekong River. It is possible this view was published locally, as the French were industrialising the region. An 'E. Postal (possibly a pseudonym) wrote for the 'Satires Coloniales' about French imperialism in Cochinchina: in 1902 he wrote: 'we [in Cochinchina] have succeeded in 'moralising' Indochina. greater self respect has been brought about by force'. POMFRET: Youth & Empire, p.41.
