A New System of Geography - A. F. Busching - 1762.
Lon: A. Millar in the Strand 1762 - A. F. Busching. A New System of Geography. Lon: A. Millar in the Strand, 1762, 1st. The first edition was published in German and consisted of eight volumes. The English edition was produced in six volumes. Busching claimed to have started from scratch in writing his Geography in order to avoid errors and omissions made by his predecessors in the same field. The descriptions are extensive and very detailed for both the physical and cultural landscapes, sometimes almost bewildering so to the modern reader. As an historical research tool this set has few if any equals. *** With thirty-three (33) copperplate engraved folding maps, each with a decorative cartouche. All the maps were done by the English cartographer Thomas Kitchin. *** Volume I (xlviii, 668 pp) contains the following Utility of Geography; Introduction to Geography; Physical Geography; Measurements; Denmark; Norway; Kingdom of Sweden; Russian Empire; Prussia; Poland, Lithuania, Polish Prussia, and Courland. Some spine ends are chipped, and the leather on the spines has some crackling. Some covers have scuffs and/or gouges, but nothing traumatic. *** The last page and back free end paper of Vol. II are missing the bottom 1/3, which was torn off with no loss of wording. In Vol. IV the first two leafs (4 pp) of the Table of Contents is missing. Otherwise, the contents are complete in good bindings, almost totally clean with a few pages having some spotting in margins which does not affect the text.
