Contraband - Wheatley, Dennis - 1936.
Hutchinson, London 1936 - The book is inscribed by Wheatley: "For Mr. E. W. Shepherd With the best of good wishes from his friend Dennis Wheatley". It is firmly bound in clean red cloth, lettered in black, the corners and spine ends are slightly bumped and rubbed. The dust jacket is the original, it is slightly grubby, rubbed and creased, with minor loss and short closed tears to the edges. An uncommon pre-war Wheatley first edition, featuring one his regular characters, Gregory Sallust, often cited as an influence on Fleming's rather more famous creation, James Bond, though in my view Sallust is the superior, and marginally more plausible, fictional spy.
