Korin gafu - - 1891. 
Unsodo, Kyoto 1891 - Oblong folio. (14)ff. Contains twelve woodblock prints in bright colors and gold and silver metallic ink by Taniguchi Kokyo after Ogata Korin in the Rinpa style. Rinpa artists worked in a variety of formats, including screens, fans, and hanging scrolls; the images in this volume include nine designs for folding fans and three vertical designs that could have been used for hanging scrolls or panels. The designs show a mix of natural subjects, such as gold flowers and deep red maple leaves, to human figures, such as a group of cantankerous priests. There are also two designs showing women in elegant flowing kimonos, and one breathtaking fan of tumultous waves crested in silver against a gold background. Compared to the bold fan designs, the three panels at the end of the volume are quieter, using of bokashi printing to render subtle brown and black ink washes for the three sparse nature scenes: a solitary deer in autumn, a small group of cranes, and a bright white crane against a gold background. This last image especially is very characteristic of the Rinpa style, which usually place simple natural subjects against a background filled with gold leaf. The images are preceded by an introduction and a page of seals in black and red, and followed by a colophon in red. The Rinpa style of painting was created in the late seventeenth century and consolidated by the Ogata brothers, Ogata Korin and Ogata Kenzan. The style experienced a resurgence in the early nineteenth century thanks to the efforts of Sakai Hoitsu and his students. In the late 1880's, Taniguchi Kokyo undertook a study of the Rinpa legacy, and the descendents of Sakai Hoitsu allowed Kokyo to see and copy original Ogata Korin paintings that had remained in the family. The copies of those designs became the basis of this book, and helped to spur a revival of the Rinpa style in Kyoto. Taniguchi Kokyo was a student of Kono Bairei, and later went on to teach art at the Kyoto School of Art in 1894 and also at the Kyoto Municipal School of Painting from 1909 to 1912. This important collection of designs is bound in mica-patterned gray paper, with tassel-style ties. Dampstains and wear to covers, and the original title label has been removed. Remnants of orange cloth to spine, and some off-setting and foxing throughout the interior. An important work from this Kyoto artist. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
